The hourlong doc is composed of footage from Engel’s own video diary, kept by him during his time covering the war in Iraq.
Engel entered Iraq as a freelancer in 2003 and kept the diary on a handheld camera, documenting the war as the news orgs began to pull their own reporters out. Engel, who speculated on the recordings that he was recording his “own obituary,” kept up the diary for the past five years and documented the changes in the prosecution of the war and in the Iraqi people who witnessed the invasion and occupation.
The Medill Medal is bestowed by a panel of four print journalists. Previous recipients have included Emily Wax, Nairobi bureau chief for the Washington Post, for her coverage of the ethnic cleansing in Darfur, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
