Giamatti joins 'Duplicity' cast

Actor to costar with Roberts, Owen, Wilkinson

"John Adams" star Paul Giamatti is going from the pursuit of liberty to "Duplicity."

Giamatti, who is toplining the seven-part HBO miniseries based on the David McCullough book, has been set by director Tony Gilroy to join Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Tom Wilkinson in the Gilroy-scripted film for Universal.

Giamatti will play an industrialist engaged in a fierce game of corporate one-upmanship against a rival titan, played by Wilkinson (who plays Benjamin Franklin in "John Adams"). Roberts and Owen play two spies-turned-corporate operatives who work on opposite sides but are having a clandestine love affair. Billy Bob Thornton had been in talks for the businessman role.

Producers are Jennifer Fox and Kerry Orent, who reteam with Gilroy after the Oscar-nominated "Michael Clayton," with Laura Bickford also producing.
