Tokyo exhibitor pulls 'Yasukuni' doc

T-Joy cites security concerns over film

TOKYO -- A Tokyo exhibitor has pulled docu "Yasukuni," about a shrine dedicated to Japan's war dead, citing security concerns.

The pic, shot by Chinese helmer Li Ying over a decade, details activities in and around the shrine, including clashes between nationalists and anti-war activists.

The pic, distribbed by Argo Pictures, was skedded to open April 12 at four theaters in Tokyo and one in Osaka.

Toei subsid T-Joy, which operates the Wald 9  plex in the Tokyo entertainment district of Shinjuku, said it decided Thursday not to show the pic and formally told Argo on Saturday.

A T-Joy spokesman told the press the pic "has a lot of controversy surrounding it. If an incident occurs it will cause trouble and hardship to the other tenants in the building."

The other theaters have not yet indicated that they will follow T-Joy's lead. The pic has already screened at the Berlin, Sundance and Pusan fests.
