Truly Indie makes 'Saturday' plans

Kentucky Derby documentary follows six trainers

"The First Saturday in May," a new doc about the Kentucky Derby, has been acquired by Truly Indie for U.S. theatrical release.

Brad and John Hennegan's film follows six trainers trying to get their horses to the legendary competition, from raising the horse to racing it.

Pic will include previously unseen footage of Barbaro, the thoroughbred that won the Derby by 6½ lengths but broke his leg during the subsequent Preakness -- the second race in the coveted Triple Crown. Barbaro was euthanized last year.

Churchill Downs, owner of the racetrack where the Derby is held, produced the film, which opens in New York and Los Angeles on April 18, with expansion into other markets April 25.
