According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, "The Big Bang Theory" opened the night for CBS with a second-place result (3.7 rating/11 in 18-49, 9.1 million viewers overall) that nearly matched the show's highest-rated episode of the fall -- even though it's now airing in an earlier timeslot and during daylight saving time. The 11 share repped a significant jump over the 9 share it had averaged with its eight original segs of last fall.
"How I Met Your Mother" followed with season highs in its new slot at 8:30 (second-place 4.3/11 in 18-49, 9.7 million viewers overall), a sharp 34% improvement in 18-49 over its fall firstrun average in front of "Big Bang" originals. And like "Big Bang," its 11 share repped a 2-share improvement over its previous season high.
Also hitting season highs were "Two and a Half Men" (5.4/13 in 18-49, 14.0 million viewers overall) and "The New Adventures of Old Christine" (4.3/11 in 18-49, 14.0 million viewers overall), while a repeat of "CSI: Miami" (3.0/8 in 18-49, 9.7 million viewers overall) was neck and neck with original programming on ABC and NBC at 10 o'clock.
ABC won the night in demos behind the 90-minute season premieres of "Dancing With the Stars" (5.5/15 in 18-49, 20.9 million viewers overall) and "The Bachelor" (3.3/9 in 18-49, 8.9 million viewers overall). "Dancing" was down by 14% vs. its spring launch a year ago (which benefited from a two-hour premiere) but was in line with its fifth-season, 90-minute debut of last fall.
NBC started slowly with unscripted series "My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad" (1.5/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) but got more competitive the rest of the way with "Deal or No Deal" (2.9/7 in 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall), while Fox ran fourth with the second week of "Canterbury's Law" (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) and "New Amsterdam" (2.3/6 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall).
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.4/12; CBS, 3.9/10; NBC, 2.5/7; Univision, 1.5/4; CW, 0.7/2.
In total viewers: ABC, 14.9 million; CBS, 10.6 million; NBC, 8.2 million; Fox, 6.3 million; Univision, 3.6 million; CW, 1.7 million.
