Pons readies 'Forasteros'

Catalan language film to shoot from April 14

BARCELONA — Maintaining his one pic per year output, Catalan auteur Ventura Pons ("Barcelona (a Map)," "Idiot Love") is readying drama "Forasteros."

Pic turns on two events affecting the same family, one in the 60s and the other in the present day: the death of a family member and the arrival of new foreign neighbors.

Produced by Pons’ label, Els Films de la Rambla, the Euros 2 million ($3.2 million) Catalan-language pic is taking advantage of new subsidy coin for local language pics announced by the Catalan government Feb. 27. Shooting begins April 14.

The script is written by Pons, who has adapted a theater play by Sergi Belbel, “one of the most important contemporary theater talents in Europe,” in Pons' words.

“Creative renewal always comes from the theater,” Pons told Variety. "Catalonia has the strongest stage tradition in Spain. We should take advantage of its wonderful input, and its wonderful actors and actresses."

Pons has a wealth of experience as a theater director and his pics have a reputation for providing a showcase for acting talent.

Pons’ latest pic to be released, "Barcelona," provided a platform for three of Catalonia’s most highly regarded thesps, Nuria Espert, Rosa Maria Sarda and Josep Maria Pou.

"Forasteros" toplines Spanish thesps Anna Lizaran, Joan Pera, Pepa Lopez and Roger Princep.
