Carl Franklin is set to direct HBO's David Milch pilot "Last of the Ninth"; Allen Coulter has signed on for Showtime's untitled Edie Falco comedy.
"Last of the Ninth," a cop drama set in Gotham circa 1972, revolves around a younger detective just back from the Vietnam War and his mentor relationship with an older detective; the younger detective goes undercover. Milch is exec producing with his longtime collaborator and former police gumshoe Bill Clark.
Franklin recently helmed the pilot for FX's "The Riches" and handled a seg of HBO's upcoming mini "The Pacific."
Coulter's reuniting with former "Sopranos" star Falco for the Showtime half-hour about an independent-minded nurse who fights bureaucracy and inefficiency in the contempo health-care system. Lionsgate TV-produced pilot will be exec produced by scribes Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius, who co-wrote the script with Evan Dunsky, and Caryn Mandabach.
Coulter's long been a regular in HBO's helmer stable, directing segs of "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Sex and the City" and "Rome." More recently, he directed the pilot for FX's "Damages," and he just wrapped production on the FX drama pilot "Sons of Anarchy," set in the world of motorcycle clubs.
