CBS greenlights 'Mike Birbiglia' pilot

Comedian's sitcom originally set up at NBC

CBS has greenlit production on the pilot "Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal," a half-hour laffer that began life in 2006 as an NBC project.

Former "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" scribe Andrew Secunda co-created the project with Birbiglia, a stand-up comic who will also star in the pilot. Secunda wrote the pilot script.

In "Seinfeld"-ian fashion, Birbiglia will play a stand-up comic who lives with his g.f. in Brooklyn and battles with the daily pressures of adult life. CBS Par Network TV is producing the pilot, which is based loosely on Birbiglia's own life experiences.

"Secret Public Journal" was first set up at the Peacock nearly 18 months ago, with Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo's Roundtable Television producing via NBC Universal TV Studios (Daily Variety, Nov.

21, 2006).

"The crux of the show is the conflict between his unconventional dream of being a standup comic and his family and girlfriend, who are always edging him toward a more safe direction," Secunda told Daily Variety at the time. "It's about how hard it is to stay on track when everyone around you is telling you you're unrealistic."
