BRUSSELS — A vast database of European TV channels and companies will be launched at Mip TV on April 9. The aim is to make the European market more transparent, both for regulators and the industry.
Called Mavise, the database has been compiled by the European Audiovisual Observatory in Strasbourg for the European Commission.
It already holds profile and contact data for around 2,500 channels and companies. This will top 5,000 as the project matures, covering the 27 countries of the European Union, plus Croatia and Turkey.
The main aim of the database is to let European regulators see how the market is evolving. Sensitive information, such as financial data and viewer figures, will only be available to this limited audience.
However part of the database will be open to the public, free of charge. This will allow program producers and other professionals to locate channels according to types of programming, for instance, and the countries where they broadcast.
Key contact information will also be freely accessible.
