The first screenings, skedded for May, will be of "Riding on the Metro," a musical presented by the Humanity Design Co. in Tokyo in December. The screenings will start in the Tokyo area and then spread out to the rest of the country.
The perf of "Riding on the Metro" was recorded by Sony subsid Sony PCL, which also edited and processed the film.
At present, only 3% of Japan's nearly 3,000 screens are equipped for digital projection, but that is expected to change quickly given the rapid digitalization of the biz in Japan, from shooting to processing. Sony hopes the screenings will help speed that transition along.
Sony has been marketing its "total system package" for digital cinema projection since May. Through the screenings, it plans to boost sales of its digital hardware and software.
