His 17th album has been buoyed by the single “Small Town Southern Man,” currently the No. 2 track on the country singles chart.
The Jackson who had last week’s No. 1, Janet, saw sales of “Discipline” slip 68% and the album fall to No. 3. In its second week, disc sold 57,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan data.
Flogging Molly scored a career best, selling 48,000 copies of “Float” (SideOneDummy) to open at No. 4. Band begins a tour of Australia and Japan next month before an appearance at the Coachella Festival and a headlining run through Europe.
The Black Crowes’ “Warpaint” (Silver Arrow) produced their highest debut in 16 years, opening at No. 5 on sales of 53,000. “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion” was a debut week chart-topper in 1992.
“Soul Speak,” Michael McDonald’s third consecutive Universal Motown album of soul covers -- the first two were all Motown tunes -- sold 28,000 copies to open at No. 12.
Jackson Browne’s second live collection of bare-bones versions of his catalog works, “Solo Acoustic Vol. 2” (Inside Recordings), sold 20,000 to open at No. 24. “Solo Acoustic Vol. 1” sold 19,000 in its first stanza but opened at No. 55.
