In bitterly divided elections, tensed all the more by the assassination of a former socialist councilor Friday by Basque terrorist group ETA, the Socialists upped its deputy count to 169 against 153 for the right-of-center Popular Party.
Neither film nor TV will be high up on the agenda of socialist leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero as he settles into his second term as Spanish prime minister.
The government can be expected, however, to announce regs implementing tax breaks in Spain, and to steadily raise its central ICAA Film Institute subsidy fund toward a final $150 million yearly endowment.
The Popular Party's defeat on Sunday avoids four years of potentially acrid conflict between a political force that openly attacked Spanish artists during its election campaign and a generally left-leaning Spanish film industry.
