SYDNEY -- Liv Ullmann will direct Cate Blanchett in Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" as part of the Sydney Theater Company's 2009 season.
Production is the first announced by Blanchett and her husband, Andrew Upton, since the pair assumed the top job at Oz's biggest theater company in January.
Blanchett will play Blanche DuBois in August 2009 at the 800-seat Sydney Theater; no other productions in the 2009 season have been announced.
Blanchett, who is due to have her third child next month, is directing Robyn Nevin in Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking," which opens March 29, and will join the ensemble of "The War of the Roses," -- an amalgam of Shakespeare's plays from that period in English history -- next January.
STC confirmed last week that Blanchett and Upton had inherited a deficit, possibly $300,000, and subscriptions are down 10% for the 2008 season programmed by ex-topper Nevin.
