The social networking site is hosting a special concert for coalition troops stationed in Kuwait on March 10 that will feature Jessica Simpson, Disturbed, Filter, DJ Z-Trip and the Pussycat Dolls. Comic Carlos Mencia will host.
Dubbed "Operation MySpace," the three-hour concert will let troops interact with friends and family back home during what is billed as the first-ever global webcast to be aired in hi-def.
"Both Tom (Anderson) and I have gotten messages on a daily basis from troops in the U.S. and abroad about how important MySpace is to maintaining a lifeline between them and their loved ones,” MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe tells Variety. "It's going to be an interactive show, so if your cousin is stationed in Kuwait, you can instant message or text them during them show and share it on a communal basis."
MySpace execs are billing the concert as the largest MySpaceLive concert to date. A one-hour version of the concert will be broadcast on the FX channel April 12. Previous goodwill events sponsored by the social networking web have included the Rock for Darfur webcasts, which raised coin for Oxfam's relief efforts in the troubled region in Sudan.
