'Pal Joey' returns to Broadway

Revival set for Roundabout Theater this fall

"Pal Joey" will be getting friendly with Broadway again: The long-discussed revival of the 1940 Rodgers & Hart tuner is set to play the Roundabout Theater Company's Studio 54 this fall.

No casting has been set. Thesps rumored in the past to be circling the project include Christian Hoff ("Jersey Boys"), Stockard Channing and, prior to Hoff, Hugh Jackman.

Helmer Joe Mantello ("Wicked"), long associated with the revival, will direct the tuner, which features a new book by Richard Greenberg ("Three Days of Rain") that revises the original libretto by John O'Hara. Graciela Daniele choreographs, and Paul Gemignani is music director.

Set in the 1930s, musical centers on a cad who seduces a rich married woman so she will set him up with his own nightclub. O'Hara based the show on his series of short stories.

Score for "Joey" includes standards "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "I Could Write a Book." New revival will include the tune "I'm Talking to My Pal," which was cut during the tuner's original out-of-town tryout in Philly.

Musical has been revived three times on the Rialto (the last time in 1976), and a concert version starring Peter Gallagher and Patti LuPone was staged by Encores! in 1995. A 1957 pic starred Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak.

The Roundabout is producing the show in association with film and legit producer Marc Platt ("Wicked"), who has been developing the revival for a couple of years.

Creative team includes Scott Pask (sets), William Ivey Long (costumes), and Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher (lights).

Revival begins previews Nov. 21 for a Dec. 11 opening.

Meanwhile, a potential revised production of the short-lived 1997 tuner "Side Show," helmed by Hollywood writer-director Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls"), will receive a developmental reading at the Roundabout in the spring. Tuner about conjoined twins has music by Krieger ("Dreamgirls") and book and lyrics by Bill Russell.
