HBO's 'John Adams' family

Cable show holds premiere in New York

At Monday's premiere party for the HBO seven-part miniseries "John Adams," producer Tom Hanks explained why the sweeping story of the second president was always meant for the smallscreen. (First episode airs Sunday.)

"You can't tell this story in the 2½ hours and the $90 million it would cost in order to put this on the bigscreen," Hanks said, adding that even HBO almost did not have enough time for the series.

"We were going to do it in 13 hours, but (HBO) told us we couldn't do that, so they cut us down to six hours, and then we told them we can't do that, so they said, 'OK, you can go to seven hours.' "

Eventually, Hanks explained, the net came back to him and said, "You know what, take 7½ hours to tell it because it is so good." (Turns out, the seven parts will play out over nearly 8½ hours.)

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller by David McCullough, the mini stars Paul Giamatti as Adams and Laura Linney as his wife Abigail.

Giamatti said he "did what he had to do" to prepare for the role, which included lots of reading, horseback riding and shaving his head.

"Hopefully, it will satisfy people who are interested in the book, and hopefully, it will pull in people who aren't necessarily interested in it," he said.
