Lincoln Center unveils jazz slate
Season includes salutes to Coltrane, Davis

The program “Miles and Coltrane,” running Feb. 12-14 at the Rose Theater, will feature the Mulgrew Miller Trio, Take 6, Jimmy Cobb and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophone section. Jimmy Cobb, the drummer on both recordings, will join Miller.
The season opens Sept. 18-20 with pianist Ahmad Jamal joining the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Jamal and his trio will perform in the first half; the trio and the orchestra will play Jamal’s music arranged for big band in the second half.
JALC has instituted a “Duos” series that will feature the pairing of Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke (Sept. 26-27), Roy Hargrove and Cedar Walton (Jan. 9-10), and McCoy Tyner and Ravi Coltrane (May 1-2, 2009).
Marsalis and the orchestra will be joined by Joe Lovano and Dianne Reeves for a “Blue Note Records at 70 Years” celebration Feb. 19-21. The orch will battle the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra Oct. 23-25 to honor the legacy of big bands; the music of Thelonious Monk will be featured in the orchestra’s commemoration of Monk’s famed 1959 Town Hall concert (Nov. 20-22) and a program of pianist Danilo Perez playing Monk tunes (No. 21-22).
A supergroup of Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Vinnie Colaiuta performs April 23-25, 2009.
