Wodell began his career in the motion picture marketing business with Fox Intermountain Theatres. He formed Wodell Sherman Advertising in 1959, and moved to San Francisco in 1962, where he ran Jack Wodell Associates for more than 25 years.
Wodell was one of the first agency owners in the film business to consult film companies about their print advertising and electronic placement. Warner Bros. was his first major client, and his agency represented Warners in Northern California and other western states.
He opened a Los Angeles office in 1972 which developed and placed print advertising for films in Los Angeles. In 1974, he opened a Chicago office, covering Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. Soon after, he opened an office in New Orleans.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle; son Kirk, a film media consultant and two grandchildren.
