Fox 2000 picks up 'Wimpy Kid'

Nina Jacobson to produce comic adaptation

Fox 2000 has acquired Jeff Kinney's best-selling illustrated novel "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."

Nina Jacobson is producing the live-action project, which is based on Kinney's Internet comic phenomenon-turned-bestseller.

Book, which was published by Abrams in April 2007, chronicles the travails of wise-cracking middle school student Greg Heffley over the course of an academic year, as told through Kinney's cartoons.

Project is out to writers and directors.

A sequel, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules," hit bookstores this month. Series will eventually contain five tomes.

Kinney, who launched the Web comic "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" in 2004, is an online game developer and designer. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" was his first novel.
