Nod, to be presented during the Genies ceremony in Toronto on March 3, recognizes the achievement of a first-time feature director. It is named after the late Quebecois filmmaker.
Polley's feature debut, "Away From Her," is nominated for seven Genies, including film, director and adapted screenplay (both Polley), actor (Gordon Pinsent) and actress (Julie Christie). The Canadian film is also in the running at the Oscars for actress and adapted screenplay.
"Away From Her," the story of a man dealing with his wife's Alzheimer's, is adapted from "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" by Canadian author Alice Munro.
