In their first day of release, Fox-Regency's "Jumper" and Disney-Summit's "Step Up 2 the Streets" were in a near dead heat at the Thursday box office, respectively posting $6.63 million at 3,402 theaters and $6.6 million at 2,470.
For both pics' distribs, it was a healthy start to the competitive Presidents Day five-day frame.
It's rare for the majors to unspool a Presidents Day wide entry on a Thursday; however, distribs have been keen to cash in on Valentine's Day auds. According to Rentrak, the last film to bow on the Thursday prior to Presidents Day -- which also happened to be Valentine's Day -- was 1991's "Silence of the Lambs."
Warner Bros.' "Fool's Gold," another date film, took third yesterday with $3.6 million from 3,125 engagements, bringing its first week's cume to $29 million.
In fourth, U and Working Title's "Definitely Maybe" romanced $3.1 million off 2,203. Pic's haul is just shy of the $4 million posted respectively by such winter-spring Working Title romantic comedies like 2001's "Bridget Jones's Diary" and 2002's "40 Days and 40 Nights." "Bridget" wound up grossing $10.7 million in its first three days at the box office while "40 Days" raked in $12.2 million.
Even though Paramount's kid lit pic adaptation "The Spiderwick Chronicles" posted $2.3 million from 3,847 in fifth, moppet business could pick up going into the weekend considering that less than 2% of all public K-12 schools were off yesterday according to Rentrak Theatrical's school calendar.
Five limited titles are skeded to open today including UTV's Bollywood entry "Jodhaa Akbar" in 100 theaters, Five & Two Pictures' "Me & You, Us, Forever" in 83, Magnolia's "2007 Academy Award Nominated Shorts" in 65, Weinstein Co.'s Third Rail release "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead" in 45 and City Lights' "Year My Parents Went on Vacation" in 18 hardtops.
