Less than 24 hours after Paramount made major changes to its release calendar, 20th Century Fox has rearranged its sked so as to take advantage of two vacancies.
Fox will now open Eddie Murphy family laffer “Meet Dave” on July 11 instead of May 30. Date became free when DreamWorks-Par moved the release of Ben Stiller laffer “Tropic Thunder” to Aug. 15.
Par’s biggest move was to relocate J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” from Christmas Day to May 8, 2009. Studio says pic can make more as a summer release.
With the slot opening on Christmas, Fox is pushing back the release of Jennifer Aniston-Owen Wilson feel-good comedy “Marley and Me” from Dec. 19 to Christmas Day.
Fox said the decision to snap up July 11 for “Meet Dave” was prompted by the fact that kids will be out of school and on summer vacation.
There’s an overabundance of comedies set for release this summer.
In its old slot, “Meet Dave” would have opened against “Sex and the City: The Movie” and come just one week before the release of Sony’s Adam Sandler laffer “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.” It also would have come just three weeks after Fox bows Cameron Diaz-Ashton Kutcher comedy “What Happens in Vegas.”
“Meet Dave” will now open on the same weekend as 3-D action-adventure “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and Universal’s “Hellboy 2.”
In terms of comedies, the next laffer on the sked comes two weeks later, when Sony unspools Will Ferrell-John C. Reilly comedy “Step Brothers.”
