TNT gives go-ahead to 'Leverage'

Devlin's action series to bow later this year

TNT has given the series go-ahead to Dean Devlin’s “Leverage,” an action series starring Timothy Hutton that will premiere later this year.

In TNT’s description, the series “follows a team of thieves, hackers and grifters who act as modern-day Robin Hoods.” TNT has committed to 13 hours from Electric Entertainment, Devlin’s production banner.

Devlin (“Independence Day”) made his directorial debut on the pilot, which was written by John Rogers and Chris Downey. Devlin and Rogers are co-exec producers of the series.

Michael Wright, head of the content-creation group of TNT, TBS and TCM, cited the high ratings of the Devlin-produced telepics “Quest for the Spear” and “Return to King Solomon’s Mines,” which aired under the umbrella title “The Librarian,” as a factor in greenlighting “Leverage.” TNT also has commissioned a third “Librarian” movie from Devlin, “Curse of the Judas Chalice,” which starts shooting in New Orleans in the spring.

The action thriller “is a new genre for us in our series efforts,” Wright said, adding that Devlin expects to bring the same sense of style and storytelling to the series form that he did to “Librarian.”

In addition to Hutton, the actors on the soldier-of-fortune team are Beth Riesgraf, Aldis Hodge, Christian Kane and Gina Bellman.

“Leverage” becomes the third scripted original series on TNT, joining “The Closer,” with Kyra Sedgwick, and “Saving Grace,” with Holly Hunter.
