TV director Kirk Browning dies at 86

Specialized in filming live performances

TV director Kirk Browning died in New York Sunday of cardiac arrest. He was 86.

Specializing in filming live performances, he helmed 185 broadcasts of "Live From Lincoln Center." His resume included PBS' "Great Performances" and Broadway productions such as "The Gospel at Colonus" and "You Can't Take It With You." He also directed the 1951 broadcast of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," the first opera written for TV.

Browning started out filing scores in the NBC music library, and then went on to direct live telecasts of the NBC Symphony. Over the course of his career he picked up awards including three Emmys, two Christopher Awards, a CITA Award, and a Peabody.

Browning is survived by a wife and two sons.
