A specially appointed censorship committee appointed by the powerful Ministry of Culture came up with the list of games out of dozens suggested by the public, Xinhua news agency reported. They were chosen because they were "healthy" and had the ability to "enhance intelligence."
No "World of Warfare" here, unsurprisingly -- the 10 games chosen were all domestically and include "Warring States II Online," "Rainbow Island Online," and "Wonderlands of learning and games."
Five were role-playing games, four recreational games and one educational game.
The Chinese government regularly produces lists of approved products -- the last two were published in August 2005 and January 2006, with a total of 25 games listed.
The ministry said the list would help guide parents so they can best direct their children during the winter holidays and over Chinese New Year.
With 210 million Internet users and rising, and with China on track to boast the world's largest online population sometime this year, online video games are hugely popular in China and the government has been struggling to deal with internet addiction.
