A native of Brooklyn, Leavitt began his television career in the 1970s writing episodes for laffers "Happy Days," "Laverne & Shirley" and "The Bad News Bears."
In 1987, Leavitt co-created "Married ... With Children" with Michael G. Moye. He went on to exec produce and write or co-write almost 150 episodes of the show, which became the second-longest running sitcom on Fox, behind "The Simpsons." The skein was nominated seven times for Emmys.
More recently, Leavitt co-created, exec produced and wrote "Unhappily Ever After," which aired for five seasons on the WB.
Outside of the television realm, Leavitt was recognized by the state of California as citizen of the year in 2001.
Leavitt is survived by a son and a daughter.
