Edinburgh spotlights femmes

This year's fest will take place June 18-29

LONDON -- The 61st Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival will hold retrospectives of the work of iconic French actress Jeanne Moreau and American filmmaker Shirley Clarke. This year’s fest will take place June 18-29 in the Scottish capital, having moved from its traditional August slot.

"Jeanne Moreau and Shirley Clarke represent exactly the sort of trailblazing spirit, boldness and intelligence that we celebrate yearly at EIFF," said artistic director Hannah McGill.

The Moreau retrospective will be mounted in collaboration with the British Film Institute and include movies such as "Jules et Jim," "Lift to the Scaffold," "Diary of a Chambermaid," "La Notte" and "The Trial."

Clarke started her career as a dancer, which led her into making shorts exploring dance and movement on film. She moved onto full-length features and docs including "The Connection," "The Cool World" and "Portrait of Jason."

She won an Oscar in 1963 for her short "Robert Frost: A Lover’s Quarrel With the World." She later co-founded the New York Filmmakers Cooperative and taught film at UCLA.
