Three days after an exuberant Maribel Verdu took an actress Goya for her perf in "Seven Billiards Tables," Spain's DeAPlaneta announced Wednesday that it had acquired international rights outside Spain to the Gracia Querejeta film.
As a conglom, with its controlling stake in Ibero broadcaster Antena 3, Spanish-Italo DeAPlaneta is a heavy hitter. But it's showing refined tastes as an international sales agent. The "Billiards" deal follows its pickup of Jose Luis Guerin's radical Venice competish player and critical darling "In the City of Sylvia" late last year.
And DeAPlaneta will introduce one or two new films at each market, said sales exec Laia Medina.
A character-driven choral drama, "Billiards" charts how a group of characters rebuild their lives after the death of a billiards hall owner.
Produced by Elias Querejeta, film achieved the singular distinction of winning actress kudos at San Sebastian for one thesp -- Blanca Portillo --then the same award for Verdu ("Y tu mama tambien," "Pan's Labyrinth") at Sunday's Spanish Academy Goyas.
