Paramount Japan goes Hollywood

18 films are slated for 2008 - 10

TOKYO -- Paramount Pictures Japan  has announced 18 pics on its slate for 2008-10, none of which are Asian, unlike other Hollywood majors in the territory.

This year, however, Par Japan, which opened its local office Jan. 1, has high hopes for "Cloverfield," which was inspired by local icon Godzilla and bows April 5.

Next up is "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Ball," which opens on June 21.

"No Country for Old Men," skedded for a March 15 release, could also perform strongly, depending on its Oscar haul. Also on tap for this year are "The Spiderwick Chronicles," "Love Guru" and "Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging."

Looking ahead to 2009, Par is planning to release "Transformers 2," based on the Japanese toy sensation. The first "Transformers" pic earned $38 million for Par predecessor UIP last year. Also, high on next year's slate is the new "Star Trek" pic, though franchise's B.O. record in Japan has been lackluster so far, together with "Case 39," "Watchmen" and "G.I. Joe."

For 2010, Par has penciled in "The Fighter," "The Untouchables: Capone Rising," "Brazilian Job," "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "By Any Means Necessary" and "The Winter of Frankie Machine."
