Wilson succeeds John Reardon, a 23-year Tribune veteran, as head of the station divisions, which encompasses Tribune's 23 stations, Tribune Entertainment, the WGN Superstation and WGN Radio.
"Most people are too full of themselves to learn anything new before they ever get to the level of success Ed has achieved," said Randy Michaels, who was appointed CEO of Tribune Interactive and Broadcasting in December. "As anyone who has ever been to the bar at a broadcasting convention knows, Ed is a great guy who just happens to come out on top."
Wilson has spent the past four years as prexy of Fox Television Network, focusing on distribution and affiliate issues. He has deep roots in the syndie biz, having headed the sales arms of CBS from 1996-2000 and NBC Enterprises from 2000-04. After working as a top sales exec at Columbia TriStar TV, Wilson formed his own distribution outfit, Maxam, in 1994; it was acquired by CBS in 1996.
The shakeup in the stations division comes less than two months after real estate mogul Zell completed the complex deal to take Chicago-based Tribune private under an employee ownership plan.
Reardon had been with Tribune since 1985. He served as general manager of KTLA-TV Los Angeles from 1996-2004.
