Disney banks on 'Hannah' concert

3-D film grosses $31.1 million on 683 screens

Studios don't usually underestimate box office numbers when reporting weekend results on Sunday.

But there's nothing usual about Disney's digital 3-D pic "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," which pulled in the highest Super Bowl weekend gross of any film in history even though it played on only 683 screens.

Disney reported Sunday that the film grossed $29 million, based on Friday and Saturday grosses plus Sunday estimates. When actual figures came in Monday, however, the movie had grossed $31.1 million, fueled by tween girls.

That's the best opening ever for a film playing on fewer than 1,000 screens.

"Hannah Montana" was scheduled to be in theaters for one week only, but Disney has extended its run based on demand.
