Yauch, (under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hournblower) directed and produced the concert film of his band's performance at Madison Square Garden, "Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!" which was distribbed by ThinkFilm in 2006.
Yauch envisions running Oscilloscope Pictures like an indie music label.
The distrib division is an extension of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which has been operating since 2003, and the initial recording arm that began in 2002.
Joining Yauch is David Fenkel, who was formerly veep of both domestic distrib and international sales for ThinkFilm. Fenkel will be working with his former ThinkFilm colleague Dan Berger who will cover domestic and international distrib for Oscilloscope.
"We have a lean, mean team where we all take on a lot of responsibilities," Fenkel said.
"We're not looking to throw big MGs at films, we're looking to partner with filmmakers and put smart money into P&A so that we can really share with the backend with the filmmakers and we're in the same boat together," Yauch said.
Noting competition among the rising numbers of distributors, Fenkel said their mission is very specific, very tailored.
"We do the films we want to do," Fenkel said. "We want to put all of our passion and resources, not into big overhead and big salaries but into the movies."
With Avid and post rooms as well as a marketing and design staff totaling six full-timers, Oscilloscope will enter at the earliest stages of development with some projects and at the distrib level with others.
Funding for films could range from the low five figures up to half a million dollars, depending on the project's need and the company's resources.
Yauch said they'll tap into grass-roots and other nontraditional frontiers to get the word out about their films.
Fenkel recently back from Sundance, is heading out to the Berlin film festival and said Oscilloscope's first project will be announced within the next month or so.
