'Fragments' comes together at Goyas

Femme drama nabs best feature, director

MADRID - Jaime Rosales' understated femme drama "La soledad" (Solitary Fragments) pulled a surprise double whammy at Sunday's 22nd Spanish Academy Goya Awards, taking both the film and director prizes.

Until that point, Spain's equivalent of the Oscars had looked like a triumphal march (with one major exception, the actress category), for Juan Antonio Bayona's child ghoul chiller "The Orphanage," which took original screenplay, new director and five tech and craft kudos.

Rosales' pair of top kudos was the academy's nod for meticulously crafted, left-of-field thoughtful cinema. Beyond that, however, the academy largely recognized a younger generation of more audience-minded, international filmmakers.

"Orphanage" grossed $36.6 million in Spain.

Now a Screen Gems remake, "REC," from two other young genre helmers, Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, took editing and breakthrough actress (Manuela Velasco). "REC" made $11.0 million in Spain.

In the new director category, Bayona beat out Felix Viscarret ("Under the Stars"), Tom Fernandez ("Suso's Tower") and David and Tristan Ulloa ("Pudor") in a memorable year for first-time helmers.

Viscarret took adapted screenplay, however, and Alberto San Juan drew the actor nod for his bravura perf in "Stars."

Bayona's acceptance speech - "There've been so many good new directors this year, elevating vastly prospects for Spanish cinema " - some of the strongest applause of the night.

One of the night's toughest faceoffs saw Maribel Verdu win actress for "Seven Billiards Tables," compensation after her co-star Blanca Portillo took the same award at San Sebastian.

Vet actor Alfredo Landa ("The Holy Innocents"), who's announced his retirement, accepted an honorary Goya.

But the night belonged largely to Rosales and to the young.
