Produced by Ted Leonsis (“Nanking”) and directed by Susan Koch (“Mario's Story”) the doc, which premiered January 19 as part of the the Sundance fest’s American Spectrum Documentary Spotlight, chronicles the personal struggles and triumphs of seven soccer players from six countries who participate in the 4th annual Homeless World Cup.
A week ago, ESPN acquired exclusive television rights worldwide to the film. Liberation will handle North American and Central American theatrical, DVD and ancillary rights, while the ESPN television premiere will follow theatrical release.
Red Envelope will provide “Kicking It” to Netflix subscribers who can either rent the DVD or watch instantly on a computer day-and-date with the ESPN premiere, when Liberation will start selling DVDs. Red Envelope will also promote the ESPN telecast of “Kicking It” to Netflix subscribers via their red mailers.
A public service announcement with Farrell will accompany the airing of “Kicking It,” directing viewers to the film’s website, www.kickingitthefilm.com.
