Produced by Berlin-based TeamWorx and directed by Roland Suso Richter, “The Wonder of Berlin” drew 8 million viewers, taking a 21.5% market share. Pic beat fellow pubcaster ARD’s hugely popular crime-drama mainstay “Tatort,” which attracted 7.3 million and a 19.6% share.
ZDF enjoyed a similar hit with Suso Richter and TeamWorx’s World War II drama "Dresden," which drew 12.7 million viewers in 2006 and went on to become a hot international seller for world distrib Beta Film.
Suso Richter is currently working on TeamWorx’s terrorist drama "Mogadishu Welcome" for ARD, which chronicles the real-life hijacking of a Lufthansa flight in 1977 by Palestinian terrorists.
“The Wonder of Berlin,” which follows an East Berlin family torn by political strife and the fast-changing events that led to the end of East Germany, stars Heino Ferch, Veronica Ferres and up-and-coming thesps Kostja Ullmann, who appeared with Ferch last year in Sat.1’s big-event movie “The Hunt for Troy,” and Karoline Herfurth (“Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”).
Ullmann next stars in Hans-Christoph Blumenberg’s “Waiting for Angelina,“ about a paparazzo and an obsessive movie fan who become pals while staking out Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s apartment in Berlin.
Herfurth, meanwhile, appears with Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes in Stephen Daldry’s upcoming “The Reader.”
