Story centers on Steidle, who was assigned to be an official observer in Sudan and who traded his gun for a camera and risked his life bringing back the first images of the atrocities taking place in Darfur. Gretchen Steidle Wallace co-wrote the book.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Freed will adapt "Horseback."
A documentary about Steidle's experiences, directed by Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern, premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival.
