Hairdresser to the stars Alexandre of Paris, who styled the tresses of Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas, Great Garbo and Jackie Kennedy and sculpted Elizabeth Taylor's distinctive hair-do for "Cleopatra" has died, his family announced Jan 12. He was 85.

Born Louis Alexandre Raimon in Saint-Tropez, Alexandre began his hairdressing career in Cannes in 1938. After he created a hairdo for the Begum Aga Khan's wedding, he perfected a variation on the classic chignon which put him on the map in 1946.

The Duchess of Windsor was one of his early clients and he would eventually coif actresses Lauren Bacall, Liza Minelli and Shirley Maclaine.

Jean Cocteau designed the logo for Alexandre's first Paris salon, which opened in 1957 on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore.

Alexandre worked closely with the biggest names in French fashion, most notably Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Balmain, Gaultier and Mugler.

On the occasion of a state dinner at Versailles in 1961, Alexandre wove genuine diamonds into Jackie Kennedy's chignon.
