Sony to focus on PS3 40GB model

20GB, 60GB models more expensive to make

Sony will stop selling two PlayStation 3 models -- the 20GB and 60GB -- in Japan at the end of the month to concentrate on the 40GB console.

Both models are compatible with the PlayStation 2, but more expensive to manufacture than the 40GB, which is not compatible.

The marketing strategy is also under way in Europe, which will leave North America as the only major territory where consumers can choose from two PS3 models -- the 40GB and 80GB.

Sony sold 1.2 million PS3 machines in Japan last year compared to 3.6 million sales for Nintendo's rival Wii console.
