“Bunch of Amateurs,” which starts shooting Feb. 2, is a fish-out-of-water comedy about an aging Hollywood action star who accepts an invitation to play King Lear at Stratford in the hope of reviving his career. He discovers that the play is not being staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, as he thought, but by an amateur dramatic society in a rural village.
The local thesps are played by Samantha Bond, Derek Jacobi and Imelda Staunton.
Pic is directed by Andy Cadiff, veteran of U.S. sitcoms including “Spin City” and “The War at Home.” Producer is David Parfitt (“Shakespeare in Love”). Jonathan Gerschfield, John Ross, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman penned the script.
CinemaNX is putting up 80% of the budget, with the rest of the financing coming from Limelight and post-production house Lipsync. Odyssey is handling international sales, with Cinetic representing U.S. rights.
NX was launched last summer by Steve Christian, who previously managed the Isle of Man’s film fund, in partnership with producer Marc Samuelson, banker Gillian Duffield and lawyer Andrew Fingret.
The entire $100 million Isle of Man fund has been rolled into CinemaNX in return for a guarantee that the company will continue to bring a substantial volume of production to the island, located in the Irish Sea between England and Northern Ireland.
