U.K. newcomer Gemma Arterton is joining the pantheon of Bond girls, landing a supporting role in the 22nd film in the franchise.

Columbia Pictures, which is producing the film alongside MGM, declined to comment.

The femme lead is still uncast even though production began last week at Pinewood Studios in the U.K.

The Marc Forster-helmed film is loosely based on the Ian Fleming short story "Risico."

"Royale" scribe Paul Haggis penned the screenplay, furthering an earlier draft written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

French actor Mathieu Amalric joined the cast last week to play Bond's main adversary. It has been speculated Amalric's character is the French-Algerian boyfriend mentioned by Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) in "Casino Royale."

Arterton made her bigscreen debut in last year's Rupert Everett starrer "St. Trinian's."
