'Youth Without Youth'
For Francis Ford Coppola's latest film, makeup artist Peter King was charged with aging the main character, played by Tim Roth, 65 years -- from 35 to 100 -- in reverse, while his love interest rapidly ages forward. King decided against large prosthetics, instead using small pieces of gelatin applied to the face. "We wanted to still see Tim," King says. "The neck piece was the largest piece we applied."
Rather than having Roth gain, weight, Coppola and King wanted Roth's character to be gaunt in older age. "We used little pieces to bring up his cheeks to make him look more hollow," King explains. King also applied brow pieces as well as small folds to the nose. "When he saw himself, (Roth) said, 'Oh my God, I'm my father!' "
