Casting director honored at Malaga

Narciso given Franco prize at festival

MADRID -- Spanish casting director Luis San Narciso will be awarded the Malaga Festival's Ricardo Franco Award for career achievement on April 6, the fest announced Friday.

The kudos fetes outstanding creative, craft or technical achievements, especially in lesser-recognized professions.

Previous recipients include cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, who worked on Woody Allen's latest pic, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"; Rafael Azcona, the dean of Spanish screenwriters; and composer Alberto Iglesias ("The Constant Gardener").

San Narciso has given big breaks to new actors, Javier Camara in "Talk to Me"; re-energized careers, including that of Belen Rueda whom he cast as the lawyer in Alejandro Amenabar's "The Sea Inside"; and constructed memorable ensemble casts, such as in Pedro Almodovar's "Volver," Fernando Leon's "Mondays in the Sun" and Gracia Querejeta's "Seven Billiards Tables."

The 11th edition of the fest, dedicated entirely to Spanish film, runs April 4-12.
