Digital may be the future, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences� highest Sci-Tech honors for 2008, announced Friday, are strictly celluloid.

The Academy Award of Merit, an Oscar statuette, goes to Eastman Kodak for the technologies in the Kodak Vision2 line of films.

The Acad hailed the film�s �breakthroughs in film speed, grain and sharpness,� which allow lower light levels, faster setups and better picture quality in theaters.

Org also is presenting an Award of Commendation, a special plaque, to Jonathan Erland for leadership in an industrywide effort to solve the problem of High-Speed Emulsion Stress Syndrome in motion picture film stock.

Aside from the film kudos, the Academy will bestow seven Technical Achievement Award certificates and two Scientific and Engineering Award plaques.

Four of the certificates and both of the plaques are going to work on fluid simulation software. Among visual effects shops, Digital Domain and Industrial Light & Magic are getting plaques, while a group from Rhythm & Hues will receive a certificate.

The makers of Flowline, Realflow and Maya software are also getting certificates.

The remaining certificates go to makeup maven Christien Tinsley; the designers of �Tiny Foggers� fog machines; and Sebastien Cramer for the Skater Dolly.

The Scientific and Technical Awards dinner will be held Feb. 9, at the Beverly Wilshire.
