Wolfram Winter, who heads Premiere’s satellite platform Premiere Star, will oversee Giga’s integration at the feevee.
As the former CEO of NBC Universal Germany, Winter is intimately familiar with Giga. The channel, which showcases online gaming and Internet content for vidgame-savvy auds, was once owned by NBC Universal.
In 2005, NBC Universal sold off nearly 70% of Giga to Turtle Entertainment, operator of Europe's biggest online gaming league, and Munich-based media investment firm Cuneo. A year later NBC U sold a $3.6 million stake to European equity firm Wellington Partners while remaining a minority owner in the digital web. Turtle divested its shares in the company late last year after pulling the plug on its IPTV gaming web Giga 2.
The German cartel office has approved Premiere’s acquisition of Giga Digital, which reaches 11 million TV households in addition to its Internet audience.
