Effective immediately, Letteri is an equal partner in Weta, joining helmer Peter Jackson, creature effects maven Richard Taylor and editor/producer Jamie Selkirk.
Letteri has three Oscars, for the last two "Lord of the Rings" films and "King Kong," and was nominated for "I, Robot."
He worked for 10 years at Industrial Light & Magic before joining Weta, and is credited by the company with attracting important new business, including James Cameron's mixed motion-capture/live-action feature, "Avatar," now in production.
Letteri's tenure at Weta has coincided with the company's rise to one of the world's leading visual effects studios.
Weta Digital co-founder Jackson said "By joining the ownership team, Joe will now have the opportunity to contribute to the future strategy and growth of the company while continuing in his role as senior visual effects supervisor."
Letteri is the vfx supervisor on Weta's entry in the 2007 Oscar race: "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," from Columbia.
