LEADERSHIP: Even for TF1 Video, France's top local disc distributor, DVD hasn't been all rosy.
Disc sales in France, the third-largest international vid market, are down more than in any other European market, off 8% during the first nine months of the year, according to Media Control GfK.
But the company -- the home entertainment arm of France's biggest TV distributor, whose library includes French-produced fare and top foreign shows, such as NBC's "Heroes" -- has been able to turn to its TV library and distribution of top domestic and foreign films to beat the downturn.
After getting battered in the first quarter, with video sales down 19.2% compared with the previous year, business is up again on an improved slate. In the third quarter, disc sales were up 6.1%, led by hits "La Vie en rose" and "The Departed."
Under Brossard's leadership, TF1 is exploring new ways to deliver films and reach French consumers through VOD, which is being delivered to more and more households.
In September, TF1 Video announced it would sell episodes of French-dubbed "Heroes" on video-on-demand immediately after they air on TV, with the full season also available for download-to-rent.
