A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 6 at 11:00 a.m. at NBC Studio 3, 3000 W. Alameda Ave., Burbank.
Steinberg turned to writing and producing documentaries after several years as an entertainment lawyer. He co-wrote and co-executive produced the first "Get Out The Vote" in 1988. He was a producer on the first "Earth Day Special" which was followed in 1991 by "Victory and Valor: Special Olympics World Games," which he executive produced.
He joined Whidbey Island Films, producing PBS docus including "The Sixties: Extreme Remedies," "Fear in America", and "The Education Wars." This was followed by "Pathfinders," a round-the-world adventure-travel series. He returned to producing for CPB/PBS, joining "National Desk" as an executive producer, where he was awarded three Telly Awards and a New York Film Festival Gold Medal. He also co-wrote and co-produced feature docu "Celsius 41.11: The Temperature at Which the Brain Begins to Die."
A native of Great Neck, N.Y., he graduated from the U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After serving in Vietnam, he started a Los Angeles legal practice focused on athletes and entertainment clients.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Brown; his mother; a brother, and a sister.
