French viewers get satellite TV options

AB Group to offer low-cost service

PARIS -- French viewers will have a choice of satellite TV providers for the first time in two years when the AB Group goes live with its low-cost bundle on Monday.

Subscribers have been limited to CanalSatelite's offerings since the December 2005 merger of Canal Plus with TPS.

AB-Sat's "bis" bundle - meaning in French "secondary" or "alternative" -- will cost e4.90 ($7.15) a month compared to an average $22 for CanalSatelite.

Extra options, including film channels, could see bills average about $20.30, still around 30% cheaper than comparable CanalSatelite offerings.
