Horak's career as a film archivist and curator has included posts as senior curator of the film department of the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y., and director of the Munich Filmmuseum. In 1998, he became founding director of archives and collections at Universal Studios and then segued to the Hollywood Entertainment Museum where he was curator until 2006.
"Horak's broad-ranging experiences as an archive professional are particularly well-suited to UCLA's long-standing commitment to both the preservation and promotion of moving image culture," said Robert Rosen, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.
Horak will address many challenges, "especially the conversion of all media in the digital realm."
Horak has taught at several universities and been a visiting professor at UCLA in both the Cinema and Media Studies and Moving Image Archive Studies programs. He serves as acting director of MIAS and will remain in that position through the close of the 2007-08 academic year.
