"Here is What Is" will be released Dec. 15 exclusively at redfloorrecords.com, three months before the CD release, which is timed to the release of the film "Hereis What Is" on DVD.
Lanois is best known for producing several landmark albums, among them U2's "The Joshua Tree" and Peter Gabriel's "So." He currently working with U2 on their new album. His solo catalog, which includes "Shine" and his 1989 debut "Arcade," is being offered at the Red Floor website.
"Here is What Is" and the back catalog titles are being offered in the WAV format for same price as MP3s. Album was recorded in Toronto, Los Angeles and Shreveport, La., during which time helmers Adam Vollick and Adam Samuels filmed his activites. The felm debuted in the Toronto Film Festival.
Vollick and Samuels are part of the team running Red Floor Records. On the site, Lanois writes that he intends to make recordings available on a regular basis.
"Imagine this," he writes, "I get up in the night and create a piece of music, as I often do, and the next morning we put it up on the site and make it available to all. We're only human and isn't it nice to serve something while it's hot. What I love about all of this is that I get to be a part of the site and let you in on something that is significant to me, a newsletter with substance."
He intends to offer music and clips of live performances, and may eventually create episodic programs relating to his travels.
